Vigo County is located in the western part of Indiana along the Illinois state border.  Unincorporated towns of this county includes Allendale, Burnette, Lewis, Libertyville, New Goshen, Sandcut, Pimento, Prairieton, St Mary’s and Sandford.  The population for these combined towns is over 107,000. Formed in 1818 and named in honor of Colonel Francis Vigo, who is credited with great assistance to George Rogers Clark’s exploration and in service as an agent obtaining military information for Clark. Historic accounts indicate that as early as 1832, a cabin was erected for the purpose of worship for Methodists and Baptists. An African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church congregation was established by 1840 and a Baptist church was organized by 1850. A historic marker at the former site of the AME Church was placed by the community in 1974 to recognize the settlement’s Underground Railroad activities.  Today a cemetery is all that remains of the Underwood Settlement.
