The Town of Eaton, Indiana is located in the Union Township in Delaware County directly along the Mississinewa River. In 1876, the first discovery of Indiana’s natural gas happened in Eaton. When a company drilled over six hundred feet and heard a loud noise, very bad smelling fumes came up from the hole. The hole was filled quickly. It was not until 1884, when a nearby town discovered natural gas that the residents returned to the location.
