The town of Brownstown lies 32 miles southeast of Bloomington, Indiana and 45 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. It is a town in Brownstown Township in Jackson County, Indiana of which it is the county seat, a fact that remains unchanged since November of 1816. The town was named after Jacob Brown, a General of the War of 1812. It is noteworthy that Brownstown was founded even prior to the statehood of Indiana itself.   The population, 2,978 as of the year 2000 is made up of 46% males and 54% females. 98.8% are Caucasian and the rest is a mix of African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics and various other races. Brownstown has a total land area of 1.4 square miles and lies in the East fork of the White River. It is bordered by the Jackson Washington State Forest and is near the Hoosier National Forest.
